The SCL-90 was developed by L.R. Derogatis as a practical, simple and valuable scale for identifying mental health status and for group mental health screening. The scale consists of 90 items, including feeling, thinking, emotions, behaviour, interpersonal relationships, lifestyle habits, etc. It can assess mental health status at a given point in time, usually over a week. It is scored on a five-point scale (from 1 to 5), where 1 = none, 2 = mild, 3 = moderate, 4 = fairly severe and 5 = severe.
This report uses age-specific norms with statistically validated validity for those aged >=18 years; adolescents aged 13-17 years should use the MMPI-A-RF.
The scale examines a person's mental health in terms of the expression of physical and psychological symptoms. If you score higher on certain symptoms and feel that certain symptoms are more severe in frequency and intensity, you should be concerned about problems in this area. The scale consists of 10 symptom factors: somatic, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobia, paranoia, psychoticism and other (sleep, eating, etc.).
As the self-report scale measures the severity of symptoms experienced by an individual over a period of time, the scale score should be interpreted with caution. A high score does not necessarily indicate that a person has a very serious mental health problem. A high score on some subscales may be due to the person experiencing some difficulties at the time. Therefore, the reasons for and authenticity of a high score (T-score>=60) should be further understood using the MMPI-2 or MMPI-3.
